Task 1.4 The Exhibition space

I will be discussing two artist, that I look at the Tate Modern.

Susan Hiller.
Jonas Mekas.

Susan Hiller

Susan Hiller’s work was located on level five of the Tate Modern. Her recent video “PSI Girls” consists of fiver floor to ceiling projection screens, that explore the relationship between magic and art using small clips from original movies.
The video consists of five young girls that have extraordinary powers called telekinesis, which is the ability to move objects with the mind.
Susan’s work is in a dark room quite large and the video clips are all in different colours. The soundtrack of the video is hand clapping and drumming, it seems to drive the rhythm of the brain whilst the coloured images absorb and surround the viewers.

Jonas Mekas

Jonas Mekas video is located on the fifth floor of the Tate Modern. Jonas video is a personal record of the avant-garde in the late 1960s. Jonas Mekas has been known as the spiritual father of American experimental videos. His work is displayed in a medium sized room in the dark. The video also contains bits of Wendy’s wedding, which had a lot of flashing lights and fast moving objects.
Susan’s and Jonas works of art are quite different, Susan’s is clips from films and Jonas video is him filming things happening around him. There is a similarity between them, Jonas video is based on true meaning and so is Susan’s.
They also use different lighting as Susan’s is edited and Jonas is not.

I preferred Susan Hillers video to all the rest, as I think telekinesis is a very special gift to have and I like the way that she has shown it as art.

Btec National Diploma In Media (Film and TV)

PROGRAMME TITLE: untitled.

DIRECTOR/ Kelly Garnett
CAMERA OPERATOR: Kelly Garnett

DURATION: max 5 mins

FORMAT: Video no dialog just music, real people

AUDIO: instrumental.

OUTLINE OF AUDIENCE:
The audience I wont is secondary school children, because bullying occurs mostly in schools.

OUTLINE OF STORY

My video is about bullying. It starts with a girl in her bed, and her alarm goes off for her to get up and get ready for school. You see her in the mirror putting her make up on and her school uniform, she puts her school books in her bag and goes downstairs to make her lunch. Then you see her walk out the front door.
The next shot is that she runs through the door and up the stairs and into her room, throws her bag down and looks in the mirror she has cuts bleeding all over her face and she cries. Next you see her writing a letter but you don’t know what it is, then you here a chair bang on the floor and a pear of legs hanging .

Audience, and audience interpretation of the work

When we watched koyaanisaqasi a lot of the group had the same views but some of them had different views of the film, some thought it was about global warming and others thought it was about the war and the effects of the war. When we watched Doll face the whole group had the same view of the film, we all thought it was about people trying to be something there not. When we watched Gisele Kerosene we all had different views on it, a lot of use found it confusing the other half found it funny.
I don’t think that it matters that the group have different interpretation of a film.
the artist of the video has there own message to send across, and the audience will have another view of it that may no be the same, but that shouldnt matter, people have there own veiws on different work.

1 discuss both past and current artists and works

Koyaanisqasi and Gisele Kerosene have a lot of similarities, as they were made around the same sort of time. They were both made in the 80s, which means the technology in that time period was the same. Unlike the girl chewing gum, which was made in the 70s.
Koyaanisqasi use music to get the message across, it has no spoken dialog, which is the same as Gisele Kerosene, but in girl chewing gum there is spoken dialog throughout the film, and there is no music. Koyaanisqasi uses time-lapse photography in most of the film, Gisele Kerosene also uses time-lapse photography throughout the whole film as well. But girl chewing Gum didn’t have any of this technology, as it wasn’t available then, they had simple camera shots. Koyaanisqasi has a simple narrative structure, Gisele Kerosene also has a simple narrative structure.
But girl chewing gum has more of a complex narrative structure. Girl chewing gun is in black and white and koyaanisqasi and Gisele Kerosene is in colour. koyaaniqasi and girl chewing gum are both ture life experience, but if you put koyaanisqasi next to Doll face you an see the difference in technology as they were made years apart, doll face is computer generated, it is also edited a lot and koyaanisqasi is made from life situation and has no computer generated technology.

5 how these works might inspire your own work.

I have seen a few videos while I have been doing media but the one that has really inspired me is doll face. It’s the creativity that has gone into the video has inspired to do my video like that, I cant do the robotic side of it but the meaning of the video I could use. The fact that everyone tries to be something there not and it will never happen no matter how much they wont it to. I think that the video makes a good point and it is true, every wants to be someone and they will do anything possible to achieve it, and I wont to create a video that explains that in more detail.
my video will be about the affects of bullying, i wont to use time laps photography in a bit of the video and a bit of slow motion aswell. i think that it will make the video more affective to he audience.

3. Narrative and non-narrative structures (100 Words)

Koyaanisqasi has a simple narrative structure, so there is a beginning, middle and a end. At the beginning you see a war and destruction, in the middle you see the rubble from where the buildings have fallen down, and at the end you see them moving on and getting over what has happened because that is what man kind does. You see them making cloths in the factories, people getting on the trains. But then the shuttle image comes and the balance gets thrown back.
Gisele Kerosene also has a simple narrative structure. There is a beginning, middle and a end. At the beginning the witches are worshiping a bird like statue and another witch comes along and steals it, in the middle they are chasing the other witch to get the statue back, and at the end the witches get the statue back. But the video ’The weather project’ is a non narrative, it is quite complex, it is just a bunch of people standing and laying on the floor, and the camra just slowly pans up to a image of the sun. If you changed the order of koyaanisqasi narrative structure the film would have a different meanng and it wouldnt have the same effect, but if you gave 1001 nights a different narrative structure it wouldnt change, the meaning will still be the same as the narrative structure is quite complex already.

2. The use of technology and techniques and styles (100 Words)

the film koyaanisqasi uses extensive time lapse photography the same as Gisele Kerosene. Time lapse is the speeding up of a image, koyaanisqasi also uses slow motion photography, which slows down an image. This makes the difference between the different types of physical motion, e.g. in the first part of koyaanisqasi there is the image of clouds moving across the sky(sped up) you also see the image of the ocean waves moving (slowed down) and this shows you the similar movements between the natural forces. This type of technique is also uesed in Gisele Kerosene.
Time lapse photography is used throughout the whole film, the film also uses stop motion which makes an an object appear to move on its own, like in the film it is the broomsticks. the person on the broomsticks jump into the air and they take a photograph then move a bit and jump again and take another photograph. This creates the illsion of movement, when all the frames are put together and played as a continuous sequence. This film is very edited, The soundtrack for Gisele Kerosene is very much like a cartoon not liike koyaanisqasi which is very futuristic.
Koyaanisqasi and Gisele Kerosene were made around the same sort of time, Koyaanisqasi was amde in 1982 and Gisele Kerosene was made in 1989, there is only seven years difference, but in that seven year technology has changed in many different ways, and you can see that in these films.

My views on Jan Kounen

the film start with what looks like three witchs in a city worshiping some bird like statue when another witch looking thing comes along and steals the statue and then from there the three witchs chase the other witch. it is quite a strange film, like the witchs are flying around on broomsticks that make moter bike nosies. i didnt understand the point of the film but it was funny to watch.

My views on Tellinglies

Telling Lies is about people lieing to each other about somthing that had happened, but they dont find the truth. as you can see from the picture it was just word on a black screen and voices, but the words and the voices told different storys, the voices told the lie and the words told the truth and there was some humer in the film

My views on Koyaanisquatsi

it is strange to discuss this film in words as the film is communicating its message with images and sounds, there is no spoken dialogue in this film at all. the sounds in the film are unusual, there is a mix of both slowed down and speeded up music which covers the natural and artificial world. the film starts with a war and in the middle it shows you the effects the war had on the city, near the end it show you factory makeing cloths trying to rebuild what was lost, but st the end of the film the is footage of a shuttal taking off to go into space but it fails and explodes and you watch the bits fall from the sky.
i think that it is a educational film.

my views on 1001 night

1001 night was created by jananne ali.

i thought that it was a bit strange it about five woman in a row all you can see is there head with a black background, they have there eyes closed intill they start to talk, they seam to be talking about a dream about the war that they had and they explain it in detail. The audio used in this film is diegetic because all you can here is them talking. i think that if there was more soung effects added to the film it would make it more dramatic and appealing to the audience.

picked this one because it shows you how old brighton is and its history, this is a picture of whats left of the old pear. as you can see it has been negleted since to new one was built.

I picked this picture because i think that it brightons up the pavment and it is very pretty.

experimental video means

Experimental video has meny different names, video art, electronic art, community video and meny more but the most important part of the title is the 'experimental' part of it.meny people use experimental videos to express there feeling and veiws on art with moving images.i made a small 2 min video last year called PLAY and it was a horror, i experimented with it in lots of different ways changing the sounds, ajusting the backgrounds and putting in abnormal vocies, after doing that my film was complete and it was good.as part of a assignment i would expect mine to up to the standard
